Working with communities to create opportunities and enrich lives.

About this charity

In Indonesia, behind the palms of some of the world’s top surfing destinations, are villages so remote that basic government services don’t reach them. There is no clean water, health services, education or electricity. SurfAid is a non-profit humanitarian organisation which was started by a group of concerned surfers in 2000 who were struck by the needless suffering and preventable death in the Mentawai Islands of Indonesia.

Today, SurfAid works to improve the health, wellbeing and self-reliance of people living in these isolated regions by employing Indonesian nationals who work hand-in-hand with the communities of Western Sumatra, Sumbawa and Sumba, to bring about positive, sustainable health change while respecting the unique culture and customs of these islands communities. They work with, and in support of, the community - from the idea for a program to the implementation of the program.
