Pregnancy shouldn't be a reason to stop your next adventure. But with a new addition on board, travel insurance cover may help you look after yourself and bub-to-be if you're suddenly injured or have unexpected complications with your pregnancy while travelling.

What does pregnancy travel insurance cover?

If you're travelling and have a pregnancy complication due to a sudden illness or injury (outside the period between 12 weeks before and 12 weeks after your due date), our policies may cover:

  • Emergency medical treatment.
  • Hospitalisation.
  • Ambulances.
  • Transport to get you home for ongoing treatment (if medically required).
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance teams.
  • Cover for Coronavirus-related events. You can check out our Coronavirus cover article which has all of the details, including benefit limits and exclusions.

To find out all the details on our travel insurance cover for pregnancy you can read our Help Center article for British travellers.

It’s also a good idea to check with the airline before you pay for your ticket to see if they have any restrictions on carrying a pregnant person.

What we won’t cover

We won’t cover a number of circumstances including, but not limited to:

  • Having a pre-existing medical condition that results in complications.
  • Normal costs or losses associated with pregnancy or childbirth. This includes medical care such as your antenatal check-ups and scans and the costs associated with giving birth, and care for a newborn baby.
  • Doing anything illegal.
  • Travelling against the advice of a medically qualified doctor.
  • Drugs or alcohol-related injuries.
  • Deliberate self-injury or wilful exposure to exceptional risk.

This is not a full list of what's covered and what's not covered. There are limits and conditions that apply, so please read your Policy Wording carefully before you buy for all the details.

How to get assistance if you're sick or injured while pregnant

It’s essential that you get in contact with our 24/7 Emergency Assistance teams as soon as possible so that you can be supported from the time you fall sick or get injured until the time you get home.

So that they can assist you quickly, please be ready with the following:

  • Your policy number
  • A contact number for where you are now
  • The nature of your problem
  • Your location

Here are our most frequently asked questions about buying travel insurance for pregnancy. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team. If you’re looking for general travel advice, you can ask our community at Ask a Nomad.

  • Do both of your policies cover pregnancy?
Both the Standard and Explorer Plans may cover pregnancy complications that arise from unexpected injury or illness outside of the period between 12 weeks either side of the due date, but no routine or normal costs associated with pregnancy or childbirth.

Customers with pre-existing medical conditions

You can still purchase a World Nomads policy if you have a Pre-Existing Medical Condition (PEMC) – whether it is serious or not – but we won’t cover any claim/s made by any traveller under the policy as a result of this condition (this includes if you’re on separate or joint policies). This exclusion can’t be removed from the policy.

The Money and Pensions Service (MaPS) has a travel insurance directory on its Money Advice Service website, or you can contact the service on 0800 138 7777. This service provides details on what may be considered a PEMC, and travel insurance providers that may cover serious PEMCs, which may assist travellers wanting cover for these conditions.
