Pregnancy shouldn't be a reason to stop your next adventure. But with a new addition on board, travel insurance may help you look after yourself and bub-to-be if you're suddenly injured or have unexpected complications of pregnancy while travelling.

Conditions of cover you should know

The policy wording outlines all conditions of cover when you and other insured persons are travelling. This includes travelling with and presenting your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to medical providers when receiving medical treatment within the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland.

What travel insurance will cover during pregnancy

If you're travelling and experience a sudden illness or injury arising from a complication of pregnancy, our policies offer cover for:

  • Emergency medical treatment abroad
  • Hospitalisation
  • Ambulances
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • 24/7 Emergency Assistance

What we won't cover

We won’t cover a number of circumstances including, but not limited to:

  • Travelling against the advice of a medical practitioner.
  • Expected costs arising from the 37th week of pregnancy such as the expected childbirth; planned medical assistance with delivery, including a Caesarean section, a scheduled pregnancy-related treatment etc; or care of the newborn child.
  • Doing anything illegal.
  • Drug or alcohol-related injuries or illnesses.
  • Deliberate self-harm or wilful or reckless exposure to exceptional risk.

How to get assistance if you're sick or injured while pregnant

Seek medical assistance if it is an emergency – your hotel, tour guide or accommodation provider may be able to help.

If you have private health insurance/private medical insurance at home, this may extend to cover you for your pregnancy while abroad. In a medical emergency, you will need to contact your health insurer first and follow their emergency medical and claims procedures. Once you are able to contact us, your travel insurer, let us know your condition and the circumstances of your injury or illness.

Our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team can help you get in touch with local medical assistance and direct you to what to do next.  Make sure you keep any receipts in case you need to make a claim, and keep in contact with our Emergency Assistance team until you no longer require treatment or assistance.

If you are travelling in the EEA or Switzerland, you must travel with your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to access medically necessary, state provided healthcare.

This is only a summary of cover and does not include the full terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of the policy. You should read your policy wording in full, so you understand what is and isn’t covered. If you are unsure about your level of travel cover, please contact us for help.

Unable to travel.

My Wife, pregnant 8 weeks and 3 days, went today to the gynecologist for a checkup following abdominal pain. The doctor diagnosed that the pregnancy was at risk and therefore she can't travel and needed complete rest.
