Food poisoning definitely isn’t on the menu for most of our travelers… but then again neither is Coronavirus (COVID-19), scooter accidents, brain aneurysms or shark bites.

We’ve seen all of these and more in our claims department at World Nomads and that’s why we think you’d have to be mad to travel anywhere overseas without Medical Travel Insurance.

What’s covered?

If you’re accidentally injured or suddenly get ill while traveling, our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team is on hand to help you. Our coverage includes:

  • Costs of medical facilities and doctors
  • Hospitalization
  • Out-patient care and day surgery
  • Ambulances
  • Prescribed medicines
  • Evacuation and repatriation if pre-approved by us
  • Prescribed physiotherapy treatments in hospital where considered medically necessary.

We can also arrange for interpreters to help negotiate the local language, customs and administration involved in accessing medical facilities overseas such as paying your bills, getting medical transport and finding the right medical facility to treat your injury/illness.

Am I covered for any medical issues related to COVID-19?

As COVID-19 travel restrictions across the world continually change day by day, we understand that travelers want to start to plan for their future travel, and we’re here to support them in doing so. So we’ve added some coverage for COVID-19-related events on both our Standard and Explorer Plans; benefits and limits vary.

If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas, your benefits may include:

  • 24/7 access to our Emergency Assistance team, who can help you access local medical care.
  • Medical costs including hospitalization.
  • Evacuation or repatriation if deemed medically necessary by us and in consultation with your attending physician.

If you have purchased the Explorer Plan, you may have some coverage for trip cancellation events which are outside of your control and caused by:

  • You or a member of your traveling party being diagnosed with COVID-19.
  • Your close relative back home being hospitalized or dying due to COVID-19.
  • You or a member of your travelling party who are permanently employed as a healthcare worker, residential care worker or law enforcement officer having pre-approved leave cancelled due to COVID-19.

Our article ‘What’s Covered for Coronavirus’ explains the benefits available if you get COVID-19 and need urgent assistance.

What’s not covered?

  • Injuries/illnesses as a result of drugs or alcohol intoxication.
  • If you do anything illegal.
  • Any sexually transmitted diseases or sexually transmitted infections (except where contracted through an assault).
  • Where you've been acting recklessly.
  • Non-emergency treatment that can wait until you return home (it's not health insurance, it's for travel emergencies).
  • Pre-existing medical conditions.
  • Ongoing treatment at home.

If you’re injured or have an illness that we believe is best treated at home, we may make the decision to repatriate you even if you don’t want to go. You must be aware that if you choose not to go, against our advice, then that will void your travel insurance with us.

The policy isn’t designed to cover everything, so take the time to read the terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions in the Policy Wording for full details so that there are no surprises if you need to use it. If you’re not sure if something is covered, get in touch.

Dengue.

I woke with a bad fever and headache. I tried to self-medicate however the fever did not subside. I went to the hospital to get checked out. It was confirmed that I tested positive for Dengue Fever and was later admitted for a period due to extremely low counts in my blood.
