This information is for Australian residents.

When a condition is truly life-threatening and the local hospitals can't look after you, or if we decide you need to be bought home for further treatment, there's cover in World Nomads travel insurance policies to bring you home to recover. That can be anything from an air ambulance a private jet, hiring a doctor, a nurse, a pilot and a co-pilot, and flying you to a hospital where they can deal with your condition), to an upgrade.

How World Nomads travel insurance can get you home.

If you’ve selected the policy for the activity you’re doing and we believe it’s medically necessary to bring you home for ongoing treatment, there’s cover in all of our policies for:

  • Air Ambulance
  • Sea Level Aircraft
  • Helicopter
  • Ground Ambulance
  • Flight upgrade
  • Flight upgrade + medical staff.

It's important to note that you need to contact our emergency assistance team before making any plans, regardless of what your treating doctor says. Our team are experts in this field (often more knowledgeable than the local doctors), and they can work out what's best for you... and, if you need to move, it can be prepaid so the money doesn't come out of your pocket.

What's not covered by World Nomads travel insurance.

First up, if we can, we'll use your existing ticket home. Date changes, and upgrades are often the most effective way to do this. You won't be able to claim that flight. Likewise, if we buy you a new flight, you can't claim for your unused flight home either. Also, if you

Travel insurance isn’t designed to cover everything. Common claims we see where there's no cover include:

  • If you've had drugs, alcohol or you've been reckless
  • If you've been acting illegally
  • Any medical expenses once you're back home
  • A joyflight after you've reached Base Camp.
  • Jumping on a scooter without a helmet or correct licence.
  • If you refuse repatriation, we will limit our cover for that condition to what it would have cost to come home. After that, your medical and related costs will be coming out of your own pocket.

This is not a full list of what's covered and what's not covered. There are limits and conditions that apply, so for more information check out our article on medical transport and repatriation and read your policy carefully before you buy.

Torn Kidney.

I was snowboarding on a marked trail on Blackcomb Mountain when I caught an edge and had a significant fall. I immediately felt intense pain, and was quite winded for several minutes. I made my way down the mountain and went to the medical center, where they discovered, after doing a number of tests, that I had torn my left kidney. They then decided to transfer me to Lions gate hospital in North Vancouver, where I was monitored and stayed there for 5 nights.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask the customer service team. If you’re looking for general travel advice, you can ask our community at Ask a Nomad.

  • Can my mum come and get me?
Yes, in some situations we can send your mum over to pick you up if you need mobility support. If you’re on any kind of administrative medication, then we might send you a nurse or doctor.
  • What happens I’m on life support?
That’s a really bad way to end your holiday, and we hope you never end on life support. But if you do, we will look at the best possible solution to either get you home, or get your family over there to say goodbye.
