Travel insurance for digital nomads

If you're a digital nomad and don’t have health insurance coverage abroad, travel insurance can help with unexpected illness and injury.

As a digital nomad, the world is your office. There are endless possibilities of where you can plant yourself with a laptop and roam.

World Nomads’ travel insurance plans are designed to adapt to the choice and flexibility of your lifestyle on the road. You can purchase a policy for periods of up to 180 days (or several plans for continuous coverage). You can even buy your travel insurance post-departure.

How are my electronics covered?

In today’s tech-centric world, taking your gadgets on the road is just as common and essential as packing an extra pair of socks. That's why our travel insurance plans have been designed for digital nomads.

World Nomads may be able to replace, repair or recover the costs of your personal tech devices when stolen, lost or damaged under your supervision. Benefits are available only after exhausting other sources of compensation, such as from your common carrier.

Remember, depreciation and wear and tear are taken into account, and claims are subject to per item and total maximum benefit amounts.

Digital nomad health insurance

Another important consideration for traveling for extended periods is health insurance. What should you do if you get into an accident or get terribly sick?

First things first. You shouldn’t think of travel insurance as a replacement for a health care plan that you would purchase at home — or depend on the charity of another country to pick up your medical bills. Travel insurance won’t pay for everyday or preventative care, such as allergy medications, birth control pills, nutritional consultations or the CBD cream that could relieve the back pain that’s been nagging you for years. But a snake bite, bout with food poisoning or ski accident? You can count on World Nomads plans to cover you for medical emergencies — and that includes evacuation when you need to get to a hospital urgently or back to your country of residence for care.

When you’re far from home, the last thing you want to do is to face a crisis alone. Don’t forget about our 24/7 Emergency Assistance team. You can — and should — contact us  when you find yourself in an urgent situation. Besides offering hospital and physician referrals (we vet our providers very carefully), the team can make sure you get negotiated rates and provide other methods of support, such as notifying your family or even arranging food delivery to your hospital room.

What's not covered by travel insurance?

When it comes to baggage and personal belongings, the following exclusions apply:

  • When you leave your personal belongings behind in an unsupervised place
  • Gear or equipment that you use for professional purposes
  • Electronic malfunctions (You'll have to hit up the manufacturer.)
  • When you fail to file a loss or theft report with the local authorities or the representative of the venue where it took place, such as a common carrier, tour operator or other travel provider

For emergency medical and evacuation, coverage is not provided for:

This is not a full list of what's covered and not covered. Other terms, conditions and exclusions may apply, so please read your policy carefully and go to our Help Center articles on baggage and personal belongings and emergency medical coverage.

Bumpy Ride in India

On an overnight train from Mumbai to Jodhpur in India, I had the top sleeper berth. It was a very bumpy ride, and my tote bag tipped over while I was sleeping. I got woken up by the sound of my camera hitting the floor. When I picked it up, the display screen on the back of the camera was grey/black and hasn't worked since.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

World Nomads plans build in benefits that support you should you unexpectedly get sick while traveling. Our medical coverage includes benefits for serious illnesses, such as COVID-19, or being placed under strict quarantine by a physician or government mandate, among other scenarios.

Trip cancellation

This benefit helps you recover non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs when you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, including for an unexpected sickness that keeps you from traveling.

Emergency medical

The only thing worse than catching COVID-19 is getting infected away from home. If you get sick with COVID-19 or another illness, you can get diagnostic tests to confirm your case and other emergency medical benefits.

Medical evacuation

If you're in an inadequate medical facility, our plans have benefits that can arrange a transfer to a hospital capable of treating your medical needs.

Trip interruption

During your travels, you might have to return home early. With trip interruption, you could get reimbursed for a one-way, economy-class ticket home and any pre-paid, unused portions of your trip if you need to change your plans for a covered reason.

Trip delay

Even when there isn’t a pandemic, traveling can have its bumps and hiccups. If your travels are delayed at least six hours by a covered event, you could get reimbursed for meals, hotels and other basic expenses.

FAQ

Here are our most frequently asked questions about tech gear coverage for digital nomads. You can also find the answers to other questions in our Helpdesk or you can ask our customer service team

  • How do my items get depreciated?
Electronics age and get knocked about. Depreciation happens to match the claim to the item’s current price, not original retail price. If you have the receipts, your items will be reduced in value by 10% percent for each year from the purchase date.
