Nobody wants to end a trip before it starts. But if that happens, you don’t want to lose the money you paid for your premium economy seat and the cute room at the B&B by the sea. If you have an emergency, World Nomads travel insurance can help recover your non-refundable trip costs, so you can start saving for your next adventure instead.

What is trip cancellation insurance?

Trip cancellation is a benefit that reimburses you for pre-paid, forfeited, non-refundable payments or deposits paid for your trip if you need to cancel for an unforeseen event that occurs after your effective date.  The most common reasons for cancellation include unexpected sickness and injury, but they could also be related to common carrier delays of 24 hours due to strike or bad weather, a terrorist incident, hijacking, being required to serve on a jury, quarantine, and more.

To be covered by your travel insurance, the circumstance that caused your cancellation must be listed under your policy.

Reimbursable costs could include transportation, accommodations, and other specified services arranged by the travel supplier who made the land, air and/or sea arrangements for your trip. The amount you receive could be up to 100% of the trip cost up to the maximum benefit amount specified in your policy.

Why should I consider trip cancellation insurance?

Trip costs can add up especially if you’re going to a place that means booking long-haul flights, extended hotel stays, group tours or packages. No matter how you travel, it could be painful to lose your investment when it turns out that your trip is a no-go. The most desirable outcome? Getting your money back.

What is covered under trip cancellation insurance?

For the trip cancellation benefit to go into effect, you’ll need to explain why your trip was cancelled. You’ll be covered for only the specific reasons spelled out in your travel insurance policy. Examples of covered reasons include:

  • Unexpected sickness or injury
  • Death or sickness of a family member or travel companion
  • Work emergencies
  • A call to jury duty
  • A terrorist incident
  • A natural disaster
  • An unannounced strike

Once you know that your event is a covered reason, you must also meet the plan conditions. This is a set of requirements that determines your eligibility. For example, if your work emergency involves a company merger, you must be involved directly with the merger process. If you cancel your trip because of a terrorist incident, the incident must have occurred within 30 days of your departure. And if your plans are disrupted by a strike, it must cause your common carrier to stop services for at least 24 hours.

It's important to note that no coverage will be available for an event or circumstance that is known before you purchase your trip protection plan. Examples include but are not limited to: an already-announced strike, an already-named hurricane and a pre-existing medical condition.

For more information, go to our Help Center article, Am I covered if  I cancel or reschedule my trip?, and read your travel insurance policy for the full details.

What is not covered under trip cancellation insurance?

Unfortunately, not all circumstances out of your control count as a covered reason for the trip cancellation benefit. Besides events listed in your policy, the following exclusions apply:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions
  • A sudden change of mind that has nothing to do with an emergency
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery, routine physical examinations, hearing aids, eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • Not having visas or passports issued on time or properly fulfilling the entry requirements of your destination
  • Fear of travel – you’re not feeling secure about a situation developing in the destination where you’re booked
  • Travel restrictions at your trip destination or warnings issued by the US Department of State.

Wife's accident cancels Kilimanjaro

I had to cancel my trip to Tanzania because my wife hurt her back in an accident. I was supposed to leave in three days, but it is impossible now because I have to take her to the hospital for a scan. I paid for a Kilimanjaro climb which is not refundable because it was too close to my departure date. I also put down a deposit for a three-day safari and had to cancel flights and my volunteer job.

Does travel insurance cover COVID-19?

World Nomads plans build in benefits that support you should you unexpectedly get sick while traveling. Our medical coverage includes benefits for serious illnesses, such as COVID-19, or being placed under strict quarantine by a physician or government mandate, among other scenarios.

Trip cancellation

This benefit helps you recover non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs when you have to cancel your trip for a covered reason, including for an unexpected sickness that keeps you from traveling.

Emergency medical

The only thing worse than catching COVID-19 is getting infected away from home. If you get sick with COVID-19 or another illness, you can get diagnostic tests to confirm your case and other emergency medical benefits.

Medical evacuation

If you're in an inadequate medical facility, our plans have benefits that can arrange a transfer to a hospital capable of treating your medical needs.

Trip interruption

During your travels, you might have to return home early. With trip interruption, you could get reimbursed for a one-way, economy-class ticket home and any pre-paid, unused portions of your trip if you need to change your plans for a covered reason.

Trip delay

Even when there isn’t a pandemic, traveling can have its bumps and hiccups. If your travels are delayed at least six hours by a covered event, you could get reimbursed for meals, hotels and other basic expenses.
